Smiths Detection, part of global technology business Smiths Group, today formally opened an advanced X-ray scanner factory in Malaysia to expand sales in the fast-growing aviation markets of Asia-Pacific.

The 130,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Johor Bahru, Smiths Detection’s first in Asia, was inaugurated by Dato’ Benjamin Haji Hasbie, Federal Commissioner of Iskandar Malaysia.  Smiths Group Chief Executive Philip Bowman and Brian Jones, Interim President of Smiths Detection, also attended the opening.

“We are the world leader in threat detection technologies because of our unparalleled commitment to give all customers the best technology solutions. Johor represents a major step towards aligning our manufacturing footprint to our worldwide business requirements,” Jones said.

The Johor facility, about seven miles from Singapore, started production of hand baggage scanners more than a year ago. It is one of Smiths Detection’s three regional hubs for X-ray production. Plants in Germany and the US complete the global coverage.
