Advice for shareholders

Smiths is aware that a small number of shareholders have received unsolicited telephone calls about their shareholdings in the Company.

Investment scams – sometimes referred to as share fraud – often involve callers offering investors the chance to buy shares that are worthless or do not exist, or offering to purchase shares at an unrealistically high price.

You may have been targeted by fraudsters if you have been:

  • Contacted unexpectedly - “cold called”
  • Promised attractive returns and assured the investment is safe
  • Called repeatedly or pressured to act quickly
  • Told the offer is available only for a limited time or to a select group of shareholders

If you experience any of these warning signs, it is likely the approach is fraudulent.

If you receive an unsolicited telephone call

Before giving out any money or personal information, take the following steps:

  • Treat any call with extreme caution – the safest response is to simply hangup
  • Ask for the name of the individual and organisation contacting you
  • Check the FCA Warning List to see if the firm is known to be operating a scam at www.fca.org.uk/scamsmart/warning-list
  • Check whether the firm is authorised at www.fca.org.uk/register and contact them using the FCA contact details. If there are no authorised details, you can call the FCA Consumer Helpline on 0800 111 6768
  • Seek impartial financial advice before taking any action
  • Look up unauthorised firms and individuals on the FCA website. Be aware that some fraudsters impersonate legitimate firms, so verify names and details carefully

Report any approach about a share scam using the FCA’s online reporting form at www.fca.org.uk/consumers/scams/report-scam or by calling the Consumer Helpline on 0800 111 6768.

If you deal with an unauthorised firm, you will not be protected by the Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme if anything goes wrong.

If you believe you have lost money to investment fraud, report it to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at www.reportfraud.police.uk.

Find out more at www.fca.org.uk/scamsmart.

For guidance relating specifically to your shareholding, you may also contact the Company’s Registrar EQ on 0371 384 2030.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
