Smiths Detection today announces an agreement with Analogic to develop the next generation of high-speed Explosives Detection Systems for screening checked airport baggage.
Under the agreement, both companies will utilise their complementary expertise in multi-energy x-ray technology and three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT) to develop a detection system to be manufactured by Smiths Detection. Analogic will focus on the development of new high-precision CT components to be incorporated into this system. The development cost will be absorbed within Smiths Detection’s ongoing R&D spend over the next two to three years.
The new scanner will maximise both detection and throughput capabilities to help meet increasingly stringent international security requirements and allow easy integration into advanced baggage-handling systems.

Under the agreement, Smiths Detection will be responsible for marketing, sales and service of the final product to customers.
Three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT), originally developed to aid medical diagnosis, builds a three-dimensional, computerised image of the inside of an object from a large series of x-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation.
