Scans hand luggage without need to remove electronics and liquids
Smiths Detection has launched the innovative new HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, its first hand luggage scanner to use proprietary CT (computed tomography) scanning technology. The new scanner eliminates the need to remove electronic devices and liquids from hand luggage (subject to local authority approvals). This makes the screening process faster, more cost-effective, and more passenger-friendly.
CT scanners examine objects from every angle and create precise 3D images, allowing for more accurate judgements on contents. The technology is already used for hold luggage but the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX marks the first product discrete enough for use in security checkpoints.
The scanner can be easily incorporated into existing checkpoint lanes and screening systems. Planned enhancements include the automatic detection of prohibited items like firearms and large knives, further improving efficiency at the checkpoint.
“The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX is a key element in our end-to-end, state-of-the-art checkpoint solution. It uses proprietary technology to deliver a ground-breaking checkpoint scanner,” commented Tony Tielen, Vice President of EMEA for Smiths Detection. “CT is the only technology likely to meet the new European standards for Explosives Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage and we’re delighted to be leading the way in this exciting new area.”
