Smiths has a certified health and safety management system in place in accordance with OHSAS 18001.
All of our manufacturing and distribution facilities that operate with more than 50 full-time colleagues are covered by OHSAS 18001 certifications.
We have a set of comprehensive processes in place to identify and control risks, conduct incident investigations, and to perform proper employee and contractor training.
And our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management Information System ensures we can track all data and provide facilities with valuable tools to help manage HSE matters.
We have tracked our energy usage since at least 2007, with a focus on reducing the associated emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy resources.
From FY13 through to FY18, we achieved a 13% reduction by setting energy goals according to total usage normalised to sales.
We aim to increase the percentage of electricity produced from renewable resources from 43% to 48% by the end of FY21.
With a focus on reducing the total usage, we have tracked water usage since at least 2007.
Most of the water used in Smiths is for civil purposes, while a small portion is used in production processes. From FY13 through FY18, we achieved a 27% reduction in total usage normalised to sales.
Starting in FY19, we have set goals to reduce the usage in water stressed areas by an additional 5% by the end FY21.
At the end of FY18, 14% of the water used in Smiths was in water stressed areas, including regions of China & Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Mexico, India, and the Southwestern US.
We have tracked GHG emissions since at least 2007.
We achieved a 38% reduction through energy reduction projects and increased renewable electricity purchasing resulting from our targets set from FY13 through to FY18 according to total usage normalised to sales.
We currently have a target to reduce GHG emissions by another 5% by the end of FY21.
Finally, we scored an A- on our 2018 Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) submission, placing us the top 5% of companies participating in the UK.
We have tracked waste data since 2007, with a focus on reducing non-recycled waste. From FY13 through FY18 we achieved a 21% reduction from our goals set according to the total non-recycled waste normalised to sales.
Starting in FY19, we have set targets to increase the percentage of waste recycled by 5% (from 66% to 71%).
As mentioned above, we also have a certified environment management system in accordance with ISO 14001. All our manufacturing and distribution facilities that operate with more than 50 full-time employees are covered by 18001 certifications.

We’re committed to meeting all applicable environmental regulations. We maintain a staff of health, safety, and environmental specialists to provide environmental support across our facilities.
In addition, we maintain an external environmental compliance audit programme which targets sites on a rotating basis with approximately 15 sites audited each year.

All of our divisions participate in a regular Restricted Substance forum to ensure compliance*, share best practices and drive alignment among Smiths’ businesses for product compliance.
Our divisions are responsible for their products and continued efforts to reduce any lifecycle impacts on the environment. This is done with strong consideration to ensure that Smiths products must be safe for our customers and communities as well.

In alignment with the UN sustainable development goals, we’re also committed to protecting natural biodiversity. Smiths’ inclusively values the diversity of its global team and the biodiversity of the planet.
We maintain a supplier code of conduct that is a key component of the contracting process, ensuring that all suppliers must comply with the code as per the mutual contracting process.
The code requires HSE compliance, emissions reductions, GHG reductions, and overall protection of the environment, along with safety protections for all employees and contractors.
We regularly review this code and update as warranted with input from the HSE leaders at Smiths.
We align our climate change strategy, planning and reporting with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations. The TCFD comprises 11 elements in four key programmatic areas of Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Metrics and Targets. We have addressed 10 of these areas in our internal climate strategy and planning as well as reporting in the CDP disclosure process in greater detail.
