On Sunday 23 June 2019, we celebrated International Women in Engineering Day 2019 (INWED).  INWED is an important international awareness campaign about raising the profile of women in engineering and focusing attention on the amazing career opportunities available to young women in this exciting industry.

To show our support, we shone a light on some of our talented female engineers across our business, including Smiths Non-Executive Board Director Dame Ann Dowling.

A world-authority on combustion and acoustics, she tells us what she most enjoys about her work and explains why young people should consider a career in engineering.

“No two days are alike, I just love the variety of all the things I’m involved in. The areas I’ve chosen really matter to society – I’m working on reducing the noise of aircraft and low-emission combustion – I get a lot of satisfaction from this,” she said.

Continuing to highlight some of the most inspirational parts of the job, Dame Ann explained why young people should consider this career:

“The opportunities are huge, employers really need engineers. There are plenty of opportunities and it’s a career where you can really make a difference. You’re working on things that can solve some of the challenges that society faces.”

At Smiths we have many talented female engineers. But we need more. We want to inspire future generations of women to pursue engineering and technology as a career.

Take a look at the videos and stories where our colleagues share their experiences as women in engineering.
