Smiths Detection will supply state-of-the-art solutions for hold and cabin baggage scanning to deliver a leading passenger experience and fit-for-future security

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, today announces that, through its Greek distributor PROTON S.A., it has been selected to supply a suite of leading security screening solutions to International Airport Heraklion Crete. Smiths Detection has been successful due to delivering the full project scope as a solutions architect, encompassing all technology, image distribution, and server infrastructure

Following the installation of Smiths Detection’s state-of-the-art technology at the new airport, passengers will benefit from faster processing through highly efficient security checkpoints. This will allow travellers more time to enjoy the airport’s amenities, while enabling the airport to deliver best-in-class security and enhanced operational efficiency

Smiths Detection will supply a comprehensive range of solutions, including four HI-SCAN 10080 XCT systems for hold baggage screening, eight HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX scanners for cabin baggage, and eight iLane A20 smart automatic tray return systems. In addition, the airport will be equipped with HI-SCAN 7555 DV dual-view scanners and SDX 100100 DV scanners for oversized baggage.

Smiths Detection’s X-ray scanners will be further enhanced with iCMORE APIDS, which uses AI-based algorithms to automatically identify prohibited items at airport security checkpoints. The technology increases security, provides invaluable assistance to security operators and continues to learn to identify emerging threats.

Matt Clark, VP Commercial at Smiths Detection said: “We are honoured to have been selected to equip Heraklion International Airport with a full suite of security screening technologies, underscoring our role as a trusted solutions architect. We look forward to supporting the airport in delivering exceptional security and operational outcomes, while continuing to redefine the passenger experience with intelligent, next-generation solutions worldwide”

The contract was awarded by TERNA S.A., who has undertaken the construction of the airport. International Airport Heraklion Crete is one of the largest greenfield projects in Europe. Installation of Smiths Detection’s equipment will begin towards the end of 2025 through to mid-2026.
