Smiths Detection, part of global technology business Smiths Group, has received an £18.5m bio-consumables order from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to support its fleet of integrated Biological Detection Systems (IBDS).

The two-year contract involves the procurement, storage and management of components essential to the biological testing process in the advanced technology system. Smiths Detection is the world’s leading provider of government regulated security systems detecting CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive) threats.

Andrew Lee, Managing Director UK, said: “This is the latest in a series of major bio-consumables orders from the MoD, underlining the importance of Service & Support to the overall IBDS programme. Our strong relationship with the MoD has been crucial in building and maintaining the skill base and managing the in-service support programme. It also helps secure jobs in our UK manufacturing plant in Watford which employs some 260 people.”
