SMITHS Specialty Engineering, part of the global technology business Smiths Group, today announces that it has been awarded a contract to supply equipment for the Chinese power industry to help control industrial emissions.

The contract is for John Crane wet seals, which are used in side-entry mixers designed for Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) equipment.

Responding to growing domestic and international concern, the Chinese government has issued regulations mandating that all newly-constructed or expanded coal-fired power plants (except for certain super low sulfur power plants) must use FGD equipment to reduce the damage caused by industrial emissions to the general environment.

In FGD processes, waste gases are scrubbed with a chemical absorbent such as a limestone slurry to remove sulphur dioxide, helping to prevent significant quantities of it from being emitted and adversely affecting land and water ecosystems.

It is expected that several power plants in the country will be rebuilt and equipped with FGD technology over the next five years.  The global FGD market is estimated to be worth around €4.1 billion up to 2020.

Paul Cox, Group Managing Director of Smiths Specialty Engineering, said: “This contract is evidence of Smiths Specialty Engineering’s drive to strengthen its position in China.  We are delighted to be working with our customer to help control the environmental effects of the power industry in what is becoming an extremely important and fast-growing market.
