Smiths Detection consortium to supply intelligent security system at new Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok

SMITHS-EMC, a consortium led by Smiths Detection, part of the global technology business Smiths Group, today announced it has won a $10 million contract to supply a comprehensive integrated security system for Thai Airways at Bangkoks new Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Smiths Detection will supply, install and integrate x-ray screening equipment, network infrastructure, intelligent CCTV systems, access control and intrusion detection systems.

In the first international contract of its kind for Smiths Detection, its LiveWave business unit will integrate the security hardware through its FirstView® systems management software to create a highly secure network and master control facility that connects all physical security equipment on the site.

Stephen Phipson, Group Managing Director of Smiths Detection, said: This is a landmark contract for Smiths Detection. The acquisition of LiveWave last November was a significant move for us. It brought networking and integration skills which we have added to our existing screening technologies to create major contract opportunities.
For this important new airport in Bangkok, our ability to offer an integrated network through LiveWave in addition to advanced security systems was the critical factor in our success.

Smiths Detections partner in the project consortium was EMC Group Public Company Limited, one of the leading electrical and mechanical engineering contractors in Thailand.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is scheduled to open to commercial traffic on 28 September 2006 and will be one of the largest in Asia with a handling capacity of more than 45 million passengers per year.

Mal Maginnis, President of Smiths Detection Asia Pacific, said: The Suvarnabhumi Airport contract showcases both Smiths Detections technical integration expertise and our extensive range of cutting edge technologies.

Together they will provide Thai Airways with one of the most comprehensive command and control capabilities at any airport in the world. Our LiveWave FirstView® security management software, which underpins this system, offers a level of security system management and coordination that has not been seen in the transportation or critical infrastructure markets before now.

This exciting new project shows how physical security equipment, such as our HI-SCAN x-ray systems, which are to be used principally for cargo screening, can be linked together with CCTV, access control and intruder alarm systems, to provide a high quality and cost-effective solution for our customers. Smiths Detection is very proud to have been selected for this project and we look forward to playing a major part in ensuring the integrity of critical infrastructure and transportation security at Suvarnabhumi Airport for Thai Airways.

Flg. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni, President, Thai Airways International, said: As the national carrier, safety has always been our top priority. This includes safety in the air and on the ground, safety for our passengers, our crews, our staff, the public and of course our aircraft and all other facilities. Over the past 46 years many things have changed, both in the workplace and in the environment, and our safety and security practices have constantly evolved and changed to meet the changing conditions. Today, effective and efficient building security systems are essential and that is why we chose to install Smiths Detection security systems in all THAI buildings at Suvarnabhumi Airport, recognizing the companys high standard and advanced technology systems.

Flg. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni noted that THAI is the first company in Thailand to apply the integrated security systems provided by Smiths Detection. THAIs main activities at Suvarnabhumi Airport includes Cargo & Mail (Commercial), Ground Support Equipment Services, Catering Services, Aircraft Maintenance, Customer Services and General Operations.
