SMITHS Detection, part of the global technology business Smiths Group, today announces it has won five contracts worth a total of $38 million to supply chemical detection and identification systems to the US military.

Stephen Phipson, Group Managing Director of Smiths Detection, said: Smiths Detection has developed advanced technologies, often in partnership with governments, which are helping to protect military forces world-wide from the threat of lethal chemical agents.

It is the application of those technologies in reliable products, which are often used under the most extreme conditions, that has made Smiths Detection a world leader in military detection systems and enabled us to win new and follow-on contracts such as those announced today.

The contracts announced today comprise:

$19.25 million US Department of Defense contract for nerve and blister agent detectors
Smiths Detection will supply the US Department of Defense with over 4,100 Improved Chemical Agent Monitor (ICAM) units. ICAM is a highly effective, hand-held device that quickly monitors and confirms nerve and blister agent contamination in personnel, vehicles, equipment and terrain. This new contract follows a $9.5 million order for ICAM awarded in June 2006

$14.2 million US Department of Defense contract for chemical detector alarm units
Smiths Detection will provide GID-3 chemical agent detectors to the US Department of Defense for its Automatic Chemical Agent Detector Alarm (ACADA) program. The units can be carried, vehicle mounted or remotely deployed to warn soldiers of the presence of chemical warfare agents. Since 1998 Smiths Detection has supplied more than 35,000 ACADA (GID-3) units to the Department of Defense

$4.5 million contracts to supply chemical identification equipment to the US Air Force
Smiths Detection has received three contracts from the United States Air Force Civil Engineering Support Agency worth $4.5 million. It is providing its HazMatID portable chemical identifier and APD 2000 chemical detection system to identify Toxic Industrial Chemicals, Toxic Industrial Materials and other unknown liquid, solid or vapour threats.
