Royal Academy of Engineering award the VentilatorChallengeUK for work on ventilators during COVID-19

The Royal Academy of Engineering has awarded the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium (VCUK) the President's Special Awards for Pandemic Service for exceptional engineering achievements in tackling COVID-19.

We are extremely proud of everyone involved from Smiths and beyond who helped to ramp up production of Smiths Medical's paraPAC plusTM ventilator and made a huge contribution to the national effort in the fight against coronavirus. This award is a great achievement and testament to all the hard work and skill involved in making this happen - thank you again to everyone!

The VCUK are one of 19 teams awarded within the UK engineering community who have contributed to addressing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specially commissioned silver medals will be presented to all 19 winners later this year.

VentilatorChallengeUK wins special award for Design Engineering at The British Engineering Excellence Awards

We’re proud the VentilatorChallengeUK has been awarded the Special Award for Design Engineering by The British Engineering Excellence Awards who stated we ‘…stepped up when we were needed the most’ and named us ‘Engineering Heroes’.

They said this was “…one of those most significant responses in terms of sheer scale, ambition and impact.” The VentilatorChallengeUK produced 10 years’ worth of ventilators in 10 weeks.

What the judges said:

“What the VentilatorChallengeUK has achieved in the space of 12 weeks is nothing short of incredible, creating and producing an approved product and setting up production facilities on this scale would normally take years.”


British Engineering Excellence Awards Winner 2020

Communicate Magazine awards the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium Gold for its Covid-19 communications

Covid-19 has made the task of communicating ever more difficult and many organisations have had to pivot their communications strategy to tackle this challenge.

Communicate Magazine’s Corporate & Financial Awards honoured the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium with two top Gold awards for:

  • Best Management of Corporate & Financial Media Relations and;
  • Most Effective Crisis Communications

Judges’comments included:

…an effective, tactical approach to communications and media engagement that resulted in widespread understanding and, eventually, public praise and positive responses.”

“This is the top entry for me. An incredibly tricky and sensitive story to coordinate and land in the appropriate way, delivered under enormous pressure.”

These awards demonstrate the 'strategic insight, problem solving capabilities and creativity' needed to communicate the essential work of the VentilatorChallengeUK during a very tumultuous period.

Corporate & Financial Awards Winner 2020

Smiths Legal rated 'Standout' by Financial Times

The excellent work of our in-house Legal Team was recognised in the Innovative Lawyers supplement of the Financial Times newspaper.

The team was shortlisted in for the European Innovative In-House Team of 2020 and also ranked as “Standout” in the Supporting business continuity during Covid-19 category for their work in the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium.

The team, comprising members of Legal from Smiths Medical and Group were recognised for their role as key contact with the UK Government and for working together with our partners in the consortium to achieve a common goal: supporting the production ramp-up of the life-saving Smiths Medical paraPAC plusTM ventilators during the early weeks and months of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last time Smiths, Rolls-Royce and GKN had pulled together for a common cause was many years ago making Spitfire planes.
