Reece O’Neil, Manufacturing Engineering Apprentice at Smiths Detection.

How’s your apprenticeship been so far?

It has so far been a great experience. I have learnt an awful lot and everyday has been different. Everyone has been very welcoming and happy to help.

What do you like the most about your role at Smiths Detection?

Working with the type of products we manufacture is very interesting. Finding out new information and knowledge each day motivate me even more. I always find myself asking what else there is that I could be learning.

What are the top five things about being an apprentice at Smiths?

  •  Learning new skills each day
  • Sense of responsibility
  • Meeting new people
  • Earning while learning
  • Sense of achievement after a day’s work

What advice would you give people thinking about becoming an apprentice?

Being in the workplace often means that you are learning new skills and gaining new knowledge without even realising it. Getting paid while you learn is just an added bonus to doing an apprenticeship.

I’d recommend anyone thinking about starting their apprenticeship to choose an area they like and find interesting. This will enrich their professional experience and make their time as an apprentice fly by.

Remember at the start it will be challenging but stick with it because everything makes sense after a while!
